How to Apply VEP for Singapore Car to Malaysia

Getting ready for a road trip to Malaysia for a food, massage, grocery run or a business visit? If you're taking your Singapore-registered car, there's one essential item you need to sort out first: your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP).

Since 1 July 2025, Malaysia has fully enforced the VEP rule for all foreign vehicles . This isn't a suggestion—it's the law. Driving into Malaysia without a valid and activated VEP can land you with an immediate RM300 fine (approx. S$91), and you won't be allowed to leave the country until it's paid and your VEP is sorted .

If you're wondering how to apply for a VEP for your Singapore registered car, don't worry. The process is straightforward if you follow the steps. This guide will walk you through everything, from gathering documents to sticking that final RFID tag on your car.

📋 Before You Start: What You Need to Prepare

A little prep makes the online application smooth. Before you even visit the website, ensure you have digital copies (clear photos or scans) of these documents ready on your computer or phone:

  • Vehicle Log Card: Download the latest digital copy from LTA's OneMotoring portal .
  • Certificate of Entitlement (COE): Your COE details are crucial. Important: Cars with less than 6 months of COE validity remaining are not eligible for a VEP .
  • Valid Insurance Certificate: Your policy must explicitly state coverage for use in West Malaysia .
  • Identification: Your NRIC (for Singaporeans/PRs) or Passport (for foreigners) .
  • Driver's License (Singapore driving license) .
  • Touch 'n Go (TNG) eWallet: This is mandatory. Download the app, set up your account, and top it up. Your VEP's road charges and tolls will be paid through this eWallet .
  • Email & Phone Number: For registration and notifications.

Your Step-by-Step Application Walkthrough

Here is the complete process for how to apply VEP for Singapore car.

Step 1: Online Registration & Submission

  1. Go to the official JPJ VEP Portal: https://vep.jpj.gov.my .
  2. Click "Register" and create an account using your email address.
  3. Log in, select "Register New Vehicle", and carefully fill in all your personal and vehicle details .
  4. Upload the digital documents you prepared earlier.
  5. Submit the application. You will receive an email acknowledgment.

Step 2: The Waiting Game (Application Processing)

After submission, JPJ will review your application. Processing can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, so apply well before your planned trip . Check your email (and spam folder) regularly for the approval notification.

Step 3: Payment & Tag Collection Options

Once approved, you need to get the physical RFID tag. There is a processing fee of RM10 (approx. S$3) for the tag itself, which is valid for 5 years. You have two main options:

Option A: Self-Collection in Johor

  • This is typically free after the RM10 fee.
  • Book an appointment via the portal to collect at a center in Johor Bahru (e.g., Gelang Patah R&R, Pandan JPJ, or Danga Bay) .
  • Bring your car and all original documents for verification.

Option B: Delivery to Singapore

  • This is more convenient but costs extra. You'll pay the RM10 tag fee plus a service and courier fee of around RM45 (approx. S$13-14 total) .
  • Previously, drivers could either collect their tag from Johor Bahru or opt to have it delivered by post. TCSens has now offered a pickup option at their Woodlands office. The collection point is located at 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5, on the third floor, and the whole service will cost you S$39, this is on top of the RM10 charge for the tag itself.

Step 4: Installation & The Crucial Final Activation

This is the most important step that many people miss. (Skip this if you opt for TCSens service at Woodlands.)

  1. Install the Tag: The RFID tag is a self-adhesive sticker. Clean your car's left headlamp (or the inside top corner of the driver's side windshield). Stick it on firmly, at least 5cm away from any metal frame .
⚠️ Warning: The tag is tamper-proof. If you peel it off, it will be destroyed and you'll need to pay for a replacement .
  2. Activate It Online (DO NOT SKIP): Simply having the tag on your car isn't enough. You must log back into the VEP portal (vepams.jpj.gov.my), enter the tag's serial number, and upload a photo of the tag installed on your car, clearly showing your license plate . Only after you get an "Activated" status is your VEP valid.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does the entire VEP process take?
From online application to having an activated tag, you should allow for several weeks. The approval stage alone can take days or weeks, and if you choose delivery, postal times add to the wait.  Apply early!

Can I drive into Malaysia while waiting for my RFID tag?
No. The grace periods are over. As of July 2025, full enforcement is in effect. You must have the activated RFID tag physically on your car to enter legally and avoid the RM300 fine.

What happens if I sell my car or my COE expires?
The VEP is non-transferable. If you sell your car, you must log into the VEP portal to de-register it. If your COE is renewed on the same car, you'll likely need to update your details in the portal.

Do I need to pay the RM20 Road Charge separately?
Yes. The VEP fee (RM10) is for the tag. The RM20 Road Charge is a separate toll paid each time you enter Malaysia. It will be automatically deducted from your linked Touch 'n Go eWallet when you pass the checkpoint .
