1. The 5-Minute Crossing You Have Been Waiting For

The Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North Station in Singapore. The actual train ride is approximately 5 minutes. As of September 2026, Woodlands North station is fully built on the Singapore side, and station and rail infrastructure on the Malaysian side is complete too. This is not just an improvement. It is a complete game-changer.

2. Trains Every ± 3.6 Minutes

Ever waited 45 minutes for a bus at the checkpoint? Frustrating, right?

The RTS Link is designed to run roughly every 3.6 minutes during peak hours. Miss one? No problem. The next train arrives before you finish checking your phone.

Each train carries up to 600 passengers, and up to 1,000 at peak capacity. With 8 trains operating, the system can move around 10,000 people per hour across the border.

3. Here is the Best Part: Clear Immigration Once

This is the feature everyone is excited about.

With the RTS Link, you clear immigration for both countries at your departure station.

  • Board at Bukit Chagar? You clear Malaysian AND Singapore immigration there.
  • When you arrive at Woodlands North? You just walk off the train.

No second queue. No waiting again. Just walk out and go.

That alone saves you 30 to 60 minutes every single trip.

4. Open by The End of 2026

5. Ticket Price: What You Will Pay

How much is the RTS Link ticket?

Still not officially set. The working estimate, based on statements from Malaysia's Transport Minister earlier in 2026, is SGD 5 to 7 per one-way trip. The rail operator, RTS Operations, proposes the final rates, and both the Malaysian and Singaporean governments need to approve them before anything is announced publicly.

What about payments? Expect an open, contactless system similar to what you'd use on the MRT today, with support for contactless bank cards, mobile wallets, and stored-value cards.

6. Where Are the Stations?

Bukit Chagar Station (Johor Bahru)

  • Right in the heart of JB city centre
  • Integrated immigration complex
  • Easy to reach by taxi, bus, or ride-hailing

Woodlands North Station (Singapore)

  • Direct connection to the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL)
  • Seamless transfer to Singapore's MRT network
  • Construction completed in September 2026

What about the KTM Shuttle Tebrau? Malaysian officials have said the shuttle will wind down within months of the RTS Link's launch, with some estimates pointing to around mid-2027. Malaysia has asked Singapore to keep it running temporarily beyond that, but no final agreement has been confirmed.

7. What This Means for You

For day-trippers from Singapore: leave home, take the MRT to Woodlands North, clear immigration, ride for about 5 minutes, and you're in downtown JB in under an hour. That changes the math for a weekend shopping or food trip.

For commuters: a train every 3.6 minutes at peak means you can plan your morning around a schedule instead of a guess, without building in an extra hour in case the Causeway backs up.

For families: fewer transfers and a single immigration check mean less standing around with kids, bags, and strollers at two separate checkpoints instead of one.

RTS Link: FAQ (Your Questions Answered)

1. Is there a train from Johor Bahru to Singapore?

Yes. The RTS Link is a dedicated train connecting Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North Station in Singapore, with a journey time of about 5 minutes. Construction is essentially complete on both sides and the project is now in final testing, but Malaysia and Singapore have not yet confirmed the exact opening date.

Not officially confirmed. Based on statements from Malaysia's Transport Minister, expect somewhere around SGD 5 to 7 per one-way trip once rates are finalised and approved by both governments.

3. What time does the RTS Link operate?

Operating hours have not been announced yet. Details are expected closer to the official launch.

5. Is the RTS Link automated?

Yes. It's a fully automated, driverless system, similar to Singapore's MRT.

6. Will the KTM Shuttle Tebrau still run?

7. How many people can the RTS Link carry?

Around 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, roughly 40,000 people a day once it's running at capacity.

Not announced yet. Expect an open payment system similar to the MRT, with contactless cards and mobile wallets likely to work from day one.

Your Journey Starts Here

The Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link is close. Construction is done, testing is underway, and the only thing left is a date. Once it opens, the Causeway crawl stops being the only option.

But here is the truth. Once you arrive at Bukit Chagar Station, you still need to get around Johor.

Public transport is limited. Taxis add up fast. Waiting for rides takes time away from your trip.
